First 24 Hours After Not Matching

The period immediately after not matching is critical. Here’s what to prioritize:

1. Confirm Your Status and Understand SOAP Eligibility

If you participated in the Main Residency Match and did not match, you are automatically eligible for SOAP (Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program). SOAP begins the Monday of Match Week. You do not need to register separately — eligibility is determined by your NRMP participation.

2. Update Your Documents Immediately

Programs reviewing SOAP applications move fast. Before SOAP Day 1, make sure your CV is updated, your personal statement is current, and your letters of recommendation are on file in ERAS. Our Application Template Pack includes ready-to-use templates for all of these documents.

3. Identify Your Target Specialties

Use our free Match Chances Calculator to assess where you’re most competitive. If your first-choice specialty has few open positions, having a strong backup specialty list ready before SOAP begins dramatically increases your chances of matching.

4. Get a Current List of Open Positions

SOAP positions are released on Day 1 and fill within hours. Knowing in advance which programs in your target specialties have historically had open positions — and having their contact information ready — gives you a significant head start.

During SOAP Week: Day-by-Day Strategy

SOAP Day 0 (Sunday)

Prepare everything. Have your ERAS application complete, documents uploaded, and a target list of programs identified. Read our full SOAP Survival Kit for a detailed hour-by-hour plan.

SOAP Day 1 (Monday)

Open positions are released. Submit applications immediately to every program in your specialty that has open slots. Do not wait to research individual programs — apply first, research later. Contact information for program coordinators should already be in hand.

SOAP Days 2–3 (Tuesday–Wednesday)

Interview invitations come in. Accept every interview you can. Phone and video interviews happen rapidly. Be professional, prepared, and enthusiastic about each program.

SOAP Day 4 (Thursday)

Rank submissions close. Rank every program you interviewed with. SOAP match results are released.

If You Don’t Match Through SOAP

Not matching through SOAP is not the end. Open residency positions continue to become available throughout the year as programs adjust their rosters. A strong post-SOAP strategy includes:

  • Continuing to monitor open positions weekly
  • Strengthening your application (additional research, publications, clinical experience)
  • Reaching out directly to programs with available PGY-2 or PGY-3 positions
  • Considering a preliminary year in Medicine or Surgery as a bridge
  • Reapplying in the next Match cycle with a refined strategy

Specialties With the Most Post-Match Open Positions

If you’re flexible on specialty, these fields consistently have the most open residency positions after Match Day:

  • Internal Medicine — by far the largest pool of open PGY-1 positions
  • Family Medicine — hundreds of programs with consistent openings
  • Psychiatry — growing demand, frequently available mid-year
  • Neurology — moderate openings, competitive but accessible
  • Pediatrics — community programs often have available slots

Frequently Asked Questions

How common is it to not match?

In a typical Match cycle, approximately 10–15% of applicants do not match. Among US MD seniors, the rate is lower; among osteopathic applicants and IMGs, the rate can be significantly higher. Not matching is disappointing but it is common — and thousands of applicants successfully find positions through SOAP and direct outreach every year.

Should I accept any position during SOAP or be selective?

In most cases, accepting an available position in a reasonable specialty is preferable to going unmatched for another year. A residency position — even if it’s not your first choice specialty — keeps your training on track, maintains your clinical skills, and gives you options for fellowship or specialty change later.

Can I switch specialties after matching through SOAP?

Switching specialties after completing a residency is possible but requires careful planning. Fellowship training, additional residency years, or a combination can allow a path to your target specialty. Discuss options with your program director and a career advisor.
