What Is SOAP and How Does It Work?

SOAP — the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program — is the NRMP’s formal process for filling unfilled residency positions after the Main Residency Match. It runs during Match Week, starting the Monday after Match Day results are released on the previous Friday.

Key SOAP facts:

  • Only applicants who did not match in the Main Residency Match are eligible
  • Programs submit their open position lists to NRMP on SOAP Day 1
  • Applicants apply through ERAS and submit a rank order list by Day 4
  • SOAP match results are announced on Match Day (Thursday of Match Week)
  • The entire process runs over 4 business days

Before SOAP Begins: Day 0 Preparation

The Sunday before SOAP is your most important preparation window. Everything you do today determines how fast you can move on Day 1.

Documents to Have Ready

  • Updated CV uploaded to ERAS
  • Personal statement finalized and in ERAS
  • Letters of recommendation confirmed in your application
  • USMLE scores verified
  • A prioritized list of target programs by specialty

Our Application Template Pack has ready-to-use templates for your CV, personal statement, and ERAS activity descriptions — all formatted for 2026.

Identify Open Positions in Advance

While official SOAP positions aren’t released until Day 1, knowing which programs in your target specialties have historically had open positions gives you a prioritized target list ready to go the moment positions are announced.

SOAP Day 1: Apply Immediately

SOAP Day 1 is the most critical day of the week. Positions are released and programs begin reviewing applications immediately. The applicants who submit first have a measurable advantage — programs review in order of receipt and can extend interview invitations within hours of positions being posted.

Action items for Day 1:

  • Log into ERAS at 9:00 AM ET when positions are released
  • Apply to every program in your target specialty with open positions immediately
  • Do not spend time researching individual programs before applying — apply first
  • Begin direct outreach (email + phone) to program coordinators simultaneously
  • Use a pre-written email template so you can send quickly and professionally

Our SOAP Survival Kit includes word-for-word email templates and phone scripts ready to personalize and send on Day 1.

SOAP Days 2–3: Interviews

Programs will extend interview invitations rapidly. Accept every interview you receive. Phone and video interviews during SOAP are compressed — often 15–30 minutes — and programs are evaluating professionalism, communication, and enthusiasm as much as credentials.

Interview tips for SOAP:

  • Research each program briefly before each interview, even if it’s not your top choice
  • Have a consistent, concise answer ready for “Why our program?”
  • Express genuine interest in every program — programs want enthusiastic residents
  • Send a brief thank-you email within 24 hours of each interview
  • Do not share your rank list position with any program

SOAP Day 4: Rank and Submit

Rank every program you interviewed with, in honest order of preference. The SOAP matching algorithm works the same way as the Main Match — rank programs in the order you would actually choose to attend them. Do not strategize by leaving programs off your rank list.

Specialties With the Most SOAP Positions

The specialties that consistently have the most open positions during SOAP include:

  • Internal Medicine — largest pool, most accessible to a wide range of applicants
  • Family Medicine — strong community program presence, IMG-friendly
  • Psychiatry — growing number of open slots each cycle
  • Pediatrics — moderate openings, especially outside major metro areas
  • Neurology — available at both academic and community programs

If SOAP Doesn’t Work Out

If you don’t match through SOAP, open residency positions continue to become available throughout the year. Staying on a current open position list — updated weekly — keeps you informed of new openings as they emerge. Many physicians find positions months after SOAP through persistent direct outreach.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many programs should I apply to during SOAP?

Apply to every program in your target specialty that has an open position. There is no penalty for applying broadly during SOAP, and the cost per application is minimal. Narrowing your list prematurely is one of the most common SOAP mistakes.

Can I apply to multiple specialties during SOAP?

Yes. If your primary specialty has limited open positions, applying to a related specialty gives you more opportunities. Many applicants successfully match into a preliminary year while reapplying to their target specialty the following cycle.

What happens if I match in SOAP but later get an offer from my preferred program?

A SOAP match is binding under NRMP rules. Once you match through SOAP, you are committed to that program. This is why it’s important to rank only programs you genuinely want to attend.
